In the Family Development-Gerontology Lab, we have conducted research on family and intergenerational relations in middle to late adulthood, focusing on interactions and supporting behaviors between parents and adult children (a) in general and routine relationships and (b) in caregiving relationships. We are particularly interested in how individual parent-child ties, as nested within families optimize the satisfaction of both individual and familial needs and how family contexts affect individual parent-child ties and well-being. We have used quantitative methods (using multi-reporter datasets and longitudinal datasets) to examine dynamic aspects of family relations across levels of analysis, including various group levels (e.g., individual, dyad, family, and culture/society) and time levels (e.g., daily and short/long term interval).

We are currently participating in research projects regarding intergenerational relations in aging families, Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (ADRD), and family care.
